Stronger Together: The Impact of Women Supporting Women

Reflecting on my journey, I am reminded of the incredible women who have shaped my path, those who have cheered me on and those who held tough but necessary conversations during periods of doubt. The movement of women supporting women resonates deeply with me. I believe it is essential not for our individual progress but for the collective growth of our nation. There is something uniquely powerful about connecting with someone who understands your challenges and dreams, someone who can guide you through a complex project or simply lend a listening ear when you need to vent. These simple acts of kindness and support can elevate us all.

Research has shown that limited access to informal organizational and industry networks has been a significant barrier to women’s career advancement. This highlights a critical insight: while talent and hard work are essential, the strength of one’s professional network plays a pivotal role in achieving success.  When women come together, we create safe spaces to share our stories and celebrate our wins.

Every woman embodies a story, shaped by her experiences, backgrounds and aspirations. Sharing these stories will empower other women and  and ignite innovative ideas and solutions to the challenges women face in society.. While some view “networking” as transactional, it does not have to be, from my personal experience, the most meaningful conversations have blossomed from an informal event, a casual lunch or an online group, the most important thing is the authenticity behind these interactions. It is inspiring to witness women support one another, share resources, encourage and celebrate each other’s achievements.

Overcoming the ‘Lone Wolf’ Mentality

Women in male dominated fields like politics have been conditioned to work without a community, Senator Natasha Akpoti’s experience is a good example. The environment pushes women into isolation and to struggle alone through the entire journey.  This mentality can be limiting and emotionally draining. Real Success thrives not just on individual grit, but on community and collaboration.  At WILAN we are committed to provide support to women in leadership positions across Nigeria. Through our aftercare programme designed for participants in the Women Running Circle, we documented the lived experiences and challenges of women who ran for elections and were unsuccessful. These stories shed light on the resilience of women leaders and the importance of sustained support. Watch full documentary here.

As we deepen our networks , lets also remember to reach out to those who are still finding their path. I have been fortunate to have informal mentors who guided me, and I believe it is every woman’s responsibility to do the same. A few encouraging words can spark motivation and help someone see the potential they might not have recognized or utilized. By nurturing this culture of giving back, we not only grow individually but we strengthen other women in our community. Let us embrace these connections and foster relationships that empower, inspire, and uplift. Together, we can create a world where every woman feels seen, supported and celebrated. Dr. Dayo Laniyi Benjamin, the Mandate Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs, FCT. stated on a recent episode of The Leading Woman Show “When we work together, it works forever-it becomes a legacy” watch all episodes of the show here

Remember, when women stand together, success isn’t just possible, it becomes unstoppable!
